Brook Trout Adventure In Northern Ontario
Several of my friends and myself where quite excited to have
finally arrive at the cabin up in the northern woods for your annual
spring brook trout opener. By north I mean northern Ontario, which has to be
one of the greatest spots in the world when you’re fishing for brook trout, or any fresh water fish for that
matter.
On this trip my buddies and I had decided to target brook trout as our main
fish of choice. We had just driven through the night and got to the cabin at around 7 a.m. Our cabin is located on
the shores of this beautiful pristine northern lake with a cobblestone bottom. The resident fish are mainly brook
trout and lake trout. We got unpacked and put everything into the cabin, and all our fishing gear and tackle down
at the dock. By this time our eyes where pretty heavy from our all night drive so we decided it would be nice to
have a bit of a nap.
I’ll tell you all that fresh air really makes a person tired and hungry.
Once we all got up and had a late breakfasts , we were ready to go.
There are so many options in northern Ontario when it comes to fishing, that we broke
up into teams up two. My partner and I decided to go fish this smaller size lake that was noted for some great
brook trout action, with a couple of our light weight canoes.
We made our way down this old logging road used earlier in time to transport logs
out of this area and deliver them to the local lumber mill. The road proved out to be bit rough because it had not
been maintained in the last couple of years. But nevertheless is just awesome to be out in the wilderness of
northern Ontario. On our way to the lake we came upon a mother bear with 3 cubs walking down the road. We only seen
them for a second, because as we rounded the bend they quickly disappeared into the woods.
I decided I would use my ultra light spinning reel. My friend the
other hand decided to fish with his Orvis graphite fly rod. Now I
have to admit he has one beautiful fly rod. He loved that fly rod,
and who could blame him, it was a work of art, and in his hands it
performed like a Stradivarius.
