Southern Ontario For Brook Trout
Stream Fishing For Southern Ontario Brook
Trout
I have fond memories of fishing for brook trout in central and southern Ontario. Most of the
time while pursuing these trout you will be fishing small to medium streams. The water will be clear, cool, well
oxygenated and mostly shaded banks.
Lots of these small streams that contain brook trout are overlooked by many. This is because of
their size. Some streams may only be a couple feet wide in spots. Usually these small streams have deep holes and
undercut banks, where brook trout love to hide and wait in ambush for it’s prey.
In southern Ontario lots of trout streams will run through pastures and woods. In central
Ontario the streams tend to be a little larger, but don’t over look the smaller streams also.
One of my favorite tactics for fishing the speckled trout, is to drive down back roads looking
for small streams that pass under the road through culverts. Over the years I’ve taken many brookies and brown
trout from inside these culverts.
The best methods to fish these is to use a worm and sometimes a small float depending upon how
fast the stream is flowing. Stand at the end of the culvert that the water is flowing into it. Next let enough line
out so it will float into the culvert up to at lease half way.
Brook trout being opportunists feeders, will usually bite quickly and hard. Sometimes you have
to feed a few minnows before you get back to the trout hiding in the culvert.
Most of my trout fishing done in these regions of Ontario usually involves day trips. Unless
I’m visiting a friend, which works out well for a early morning outing.
