nipigon broo trout

Ontario is world-renowned as the most prolific place to catch freshwater fish with the largest trout caught in the world, holding the world record of brook trout caught since 1916. Brook trout thrives in the cold, rapidly currents which Nipigon River offers. The Nipigon River itself, coined as the “finest trout stream in the world”. Both fishing from a boat and from the shoreline offers great challenges from the boldest brook trout in the world.

The Nipigon River

Nipigon River is the largest river that leads into Lake Superior. It is legendary for the sheer quantity and the size of the brook trout that flourishes in the river.

Not only are there trout, but the river is also known to provide other species of freshwater fish, such as pacific salmon, walleye and even the northern pike. Although fishing can begin in early May, the prime time for trout fishing in Nipigon River, are the first two weeks of June, and late August.

Facts and Figures

The river itself stretches for just over 51 km and 95 metres deep. The Nipigon River is also defined by four dams, the first being the Cameron Falls Dam built in 1918, the Virgin Falls Dam in 1925, Alexander Dam in 1930 and finally the Pine Portage Dam which was built in the 1950s.

History of the Nipigon River

Incidents of over-fishing in the early 1800s and then the creation of four dams more recently has led to much environmental destruction and changes in the water levels and water pressure. However, this had led to certain areas of the river acquiring calmer waters.

More recently, approximately twenty years ago a rehabilitation plan was mapped out and has since been in effect in order to maintain the standard of waters and amount of brook trout in the area. Fishery management seminars and progams have also been called into effect in order to improve the water levels of the Nipigon River and to maintain the populations of the fish species, especially brook trout.

Other Interests in the Area

Not only is fishing the only sport that is available in the region, sailing and kayaking are also offered. Equipment for all sports can be rented or purchased easily nearby.

Accommodations in the Surrounding Area

There are luxury cabins and lodges located around Nipigon River, equipped with kitchens, both hot and cold water and even wi-fi internet. Both training programs and seminars are available for first-timers or for those who are truly serious in becoming frequent anglers.
