Brook Trout - The Wonderful Fish

Brook Trout - The Wonderful Fish

The Brook Trout is probably the best game fish there is, their open-minded little fighters. That are native to our lakes and rivers, the sad news is their losing ground and their habitats are dwindling away. So if you are a beginner or experienced , please try to practice catch and release when fishing them. So you and I and generations to come , may have the privilege of catching and releasing the ever wonderful Brookie. Also remember to leave only foot prints while in search of the squaretail.

Why their Open-Minded Fighters

Now what makes this beautiful fish the open-minded fighter, plus the best trout to fish for as a beginner. Is man and his intervention of logging, stocking of non-native trout (Brown, Rainbow trout) etc. Which has pushed this fish high into its watershed to hide, Now in these head waters they find the gin clear water to sustain life. There not always the prefect habitats where they left, where food selection was greater. But for survival, they evolved into the open-minded fighters that take about anything. Plus the added fact, you may have to walk way back into back country, up hills or mountains to find them. Which stops most anglers, So pressure on them is low.

Want to Catch Trout

Let me you give some insight on how are little friends spend their time eating. Which is at or near the bottom 90% to 95% of the time. So this tip gives you an idea the best way to fish for them. This is all trout not just Brookies. So if you wish to catch a trout not just brookies, you will need to understand there eating behaviors . From there it's a matter of how you wish to fish for them, there are three types of methods for fishing and catching trout.

River, Lake Bait Fishing

This is the best way for the beginner till you understand the fish and their eating behaviors. It's easy for the river just walk the banks or the river's edge, and fish the deep holes, log jams, undercut Banks, with hook and worm. Then you will present your worm in what is called a dead drift to the fish.Dead drifting is a natural way of presenting your worm to the fish, its bouncing along the bottom in a free state. Lake fishing is a little different, you can walk the shore line and play the drop offs. But its best from a boat and in lakes you will fish the bottom. You will need to get it down fast or the little ones will eat you out of bait and boat.

River Spinner Fishing

You walk against the current , throwing your spinner up stream, 20 to 30 ft. Then reel it back at a fast to medium retrieve. The current will push your spinner down to the bottom. So you need to start to reel the moment the spinner hits the water. With the right retrieve (and this will take some practice)the spinner will follow the contour of the river bottom, right where they eat ! Bingo. Then it just becomes a spinner choice, till they bite.

River Fly Fishing

Now Fly Fishing is a challenge in itself, because with fly fishing you need to understand the aquatic life in the river. You'll need to understand the life cycle of mayflies, caddis flies, stone flies and more. Each stage of the insect life cycle brings a new eating behavior from the fish. Now casting can be mastered in a day on the river.

Pick a Method and Read

Find a method of fishing that fits you , then you'll need to read. Look for info on rods, reels, lines and clothing. Plus info on what gadgets and accessories you will need for comfortable easy fishing . Now don't over read , get a good understanding of your needs , also don't spend a lot till you know you like it. But get out and experience it, experience is the best teacher. I'll see you on the river or lake and please practice catch and release fishing and only leave your foot prints.
